An Elegant Art Deco Wedding

Ruth and Steven celebrated with an elegant art deco spring wedding at Morden Hall.

With some of the bride’s family travelling from the USA and one of the groomsmen arriving from Australia, Ruth and Steven were looking for a venue in an easily accessible location where an events team would take control of the organisation. Morden Hall ticked all their boxes!

The renovated Georgian building suited our taste. The staircase was a beautiful feature and we liked the fact that there were two rooms to get ready in – one for the bride and one for the groom!

Setting an April wedding date at this Surrey wedding venue, beautiful spring colours of yellow, white and blue were chosen. Introducing two themes, the tables were named after Marvel films while a general art deco style was chosen for the décor.

Our cake was a combination of the two themes – art deco style with a small Iron Man poking out from underneath!

Flowers adorned the staircases and also featured in stunning arrangements in the fireplaces and on the tables. Finally, lanterns added romantic, ambient lighting and family photographs introduced an element of personalisation.

Looking the part

Ruth had her heart set on finding a lace dress with sleeves which proved quite a challenge. In the end, she chose an elegant Maggie Sottero strapless lace gown and a lace top from Essense of Australia.

It fitted me really well and showed off my figure. The top matched the lace of my dress perfectly and it was hard to tell that my dress was actually in two parts.

The beautiful bride accessorised with an art deco headpiece and Swarovski bracelet. Her wedding shoes were completely bespoke.

I work in buying and merchandising for New Look and run one of the shoe departments. My wedding shoes were made by one of our suppliers and based on my favourite pair of heels!

To complete the look, Ruth carried a bouquet of lisianthus, ivory roses, blue delphiniums and yellow freesia, hand tied with ivory ribbon. The bridesmaid’s posies were similar but smaller in size.

Steven certainly looked the part in a navy blue suit from Moss Bros while the bridesmaids continued the blue theme in navy dresses.

I chose their dresses as they can be worn in different ways to suit their body shapes. I didn’t want them to look exactly the same.

Wedding day details

Following their romantic ceremony, the wedding breakfast was served in the imposing Mulberry room. An exceptional menu provided by our on-site catering team, included individual filo tart with goat’s cheese, fillet of beef with potato dauphinoise and glazed lemon tart with raspberry coulis.

We loved the food – it was fine dining standard and we love to eat out. The beef was a real stand out dish – everyone commented how much they loved it.

As day turned to evening, DJ Neil from A1 Discos filled the dance floor and the newlyweds took to the floor to ‘You Got The Love’ by Florence and the Machine. Delicious pizza was cooked in the outdoor pizza oven.

Our guests loved the pizza so much, some of them took up post beside the oven to ensure they didn’t miss out!

As a thoughtful favour, each guest received a shortbread biscuit with an art deco design featuring the names of the happy couple and the wedding date.

Ruth’s top wedding tip:

Be organised and have spreadsheets! We listed everything that needed doing with payment deadlines and it really helped. Organise everything together and share the tasks.

Apart from forgetting to throw the bouquet, we wouldn’t have done anything differently – it was the wedding day we had always wanted.
